The City of Cozad and the Board of Public Works have received an Industry Pioneer Award for their innovative efforts to enhance the quality of life in Cozad through improvements in electric and sewer services. In 2022, they participated in a pilot program by Fast Forward in Kearney, utilizing a vehicle-mounted camera system for powerline patrol and GIS initiatives. This initiative aimed to reduce power outages and wildfires caused by powerlines. The program enabled Cozad to build an initial GIS map and identify anomalies for repair, leading to increased reliability and safety. Following the success of the program, Cozad conducted a second thermal inspection in December 2023, resulting in significant cost savings and improved reliability. Cozad was recognized as the first city in the nation to complete a system-wide thermal inspection, demonstrating leadership in proactive and innovative maintenance practices. Dusty Birge presented the Industrial Pioneer Award to Cozad on behalf of Fast Forward, emphasizing the significance of their achievement in advancing technology for rural towns.
